Description
The picture is a grid of forty-eight squares in which the ratio of the two colours shifts by a fixed increment across each row. It was made as a working test rather than as an exhibition piece, and the artist’s notes are written directly onto the linen in the lower margin. Because acrylic dries at a consistent sheen the whole surface reads flat, which is necessary for the comparison to work.
Three squares near the centre have been overpainted and renumbered. Sold unstretched, as it was made.
