Lytro, Inc.

Lytro, Inc. is an American company founded in 2006 by Ren Ng, a light-field photography researcher who holds a Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford. The company, based in Mountain View, California, focuses on light-field camera technology and development. The technological innovations that Lytro, Inc. would pursue were rooted in Ng’s 2006 dissertation exploring the theoretical concept that a camera could capture all light traveling in every direction. Ng was awarded the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award for best thesis in computer science and engineering, and Stanford University’s Arthur Samuel Award for Best Ph.D. Dissertation. In 2012, Ng was named one of the 100 “Most Creative People in Business” by Fast Company. That same year, Lytro, Inc. launched its first-generation camera.
