In print media, it is not enough for a project to be only informative or only well designed. In Francesco Franchi’s world, every layout and illustration must walk the line between journalism and graphic design. Franchi studied industrial design at the Politecnico of Milan and completed an ERASMUS exchange at the London Metropolitan University. He currently works as art director of IL (Ideas and Lifestyles), a monthly magazine that supplements Italy’s leading economics newspaper, Il Sole 24 Ore. Today, data, graphics, and illustration are merging into print and digital presentations to tell a story. Widely known around the world for his innovative work as an editorial designer, Franchi is the author of Designing News: Changing the World of Editorial Design and Information Graphics (2013). Above all else, Franchi’s work balances artistic and utilitarian function.
