Status Cloth (Democratic Republic of the Congo), late 19th century

Four pieces of woven raffia seamed together down the long sides with buttonhole stitch to form a rectangular panel. Each piece is patterned with irregular geometric forms in tan and dark brown raffia pile with reddish-brown outlining stitch.
