Sidewall (England), ca. 1750

Depicts the story of Judith, who is kneeling before Osiah. On the floor immediately in front of Judith is the head of Holophernes lying on a blanket. Judith is offering Holophernes’s head to Osiah. Behind Judith and facing Osiah, are a priest and three soldiers, all standing. Osian is standing. This scene is enclosed in a frame suggestive of transposed pedi- ments used over doors. Between the scrolls of pediments the spaces are filled in with the effect of marble. On reverse side is the English excise stamp with the word “paper” printed beneath.
