Pidan Temple Hanging (Cambodia), 1900–1969

Temple hanging depicting scenes from the life of Buddha. Long horizontal panel with a repeat of various figurative motifs. The panel can be divided into three horizontal bands: top, an elaborate temple protecting a seated figure or image; middle, an elaborate temple with high spire piercing top band protecting a seated figure or image–this temple is guarded by a white elephant on each side plus small human figures and birds; bottom, two leopards facing a shrub growing from a mound alternating with a flowering tree attracting birds. Colors: deep red, red-black, yellow, green, ivory.
