Panel (France), 1670–85

Elaborate design with a central, throned figure of a young man in a high headdress holding a scepter in his right hand. He is flanked by symmetrical standing figures with similar feather crowns. Each holds a fan in an extended arm while the other arm supports a large crown above the central figure. Above, left and right, are portraits in medallions with a pair of cages holding owls in profile, and helmets and crossed banners. Right and left of the central figure are trees bearing crossed banners and musical instruments. Below, left and right, an elaborate frame for rayed suns, the symbol of Louis XIV.
