Huipil (Mexico), 1900–1950

Holiday huipil made up, front and back, of three strips of undyed cotton cloth banded horizontally at regular intervals with small groups of red and dark blue wool pencil stripes. The wider center strip has single vertical strip of wool woven down each side close to edge. Three strips joined to make huipil by hand sewing. Sides are open except for wool open work near bottom. Shallow round neck has applied border with toothed edge of red rayon cloth, pink fancy cloth rayon ribbon and rickrack. Embroidered bright wool geometric detail in narrow striped bands, especially in central front panel.
