Ceremonial Cloth (kamben Geringsing) (Indonesia), 1931

Textile created in double ikat or ‘geringsing technique’ (within Indonesia, only practiced in the village of Tenganan, East Bali). Shows symetrical scaled design of large half medallions with complex decorative filling featuring the “wayang putri isi” motif (two wayang figures sitting next to each other). Four-pointed stars with notched design in the interspaces of medallions. Design in rust and tan on black ground. Reep and borders, each containting rectangle with smaller rosette repeat with two narrow rosette borders at bottom. Three guard strips terminating in twisted warp fringe. Two plain selvedges of white and blue stripe.
