Box (USA), early 19th century

Rectangular box with hinged cover domed from front to back. Ring bail handle on cover, and hinged harp fastening. Painted black with horizontal band of dull gray and upper half of body on front and two ends only. On the front of band and extending below are sprays of acorns and leaves; on each end a small branch of cherries. Colors are vermillion red, yellow, and green, with black lines. Cover has two double sprays of yellow fond-type leaves, with some red, and yellow lines across ends. A continuous border of repeated 3-leaf motif in yellow extends across ends and front.
