Bedcover (England), ca. 1770

Large quilted bedcover of cream-white cotton plate printed in blue. Design shows a landscape; in the foreground, at left, under a cluster of trees, a man plays a pipe while another leans on a long stick, listening. In front of these two figures are grazing cattle and sheep. Behind the two men, on a road, a man and a woman leading a small boy pass by. Farther down the road is a man with a basket on his head. Beyond the fence on the side of the road is a park with a deer and an orchard. In the far background are two large houses with tall pines behind them. Bedcover is edged with a narrow printed border and is lined with plain white cotton and interlined. Quilting is in a simple zigzag pattern.
