Bag (France), 19th century

Tall white cap, or hat, off white cotton. Wider at top, shaped to fit forehead at bottom, and folds flat. Quilted and heavily padded; back, design of white ridges that ray out from bottom to top; front in formal, symmetrical foliage pattern rising from narrow base, and wider at top. Design in various widths of padding, and worked also with knots. Lined with coarse linen.
