Sampler (England), 1740

Vertical rectangular sampler in green and red on a cream ground. In the upper register, small floral borders and three alphabets. In the middle is a wide, symmetrical floral border with stylized carnations. Below, the Ten Commandments in rhyming couplets. A linked octagon band at the bottom bears the inscription Anne Hart 1740, surmounted by three hearts. The two outer octagons contain dogs or lions facing a pine tree, which characterize Norfolk samplers.
